Christmas. The most wonderful time of the year. And, the best Christmas ever was the very first one. God’s only son, Jesus, came to Earth from God himself to us to help us, even though we don’t deserve it.
THE PROPHETS’ FORETELLING
Thousands of years ago, God sent prophets like Isaiah and Malachi to tell everyone that a Messiah would come. It seems like an impossible thing to happen, but it was true. Because not everybody believed in God, many people were doing bad things. One of the biggest? They were worshipping idols. They didn’t understand that the God of Heaven who brought them out of slavery in Egypt was the one true God.
Despite what many people were doing to disobey God, the prophet Isaiah assured them that someone wonderful would arrive. He said, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)
Because God loves us, he wanted to save us from the bad things we’ve done. And, that’s why he sent his son, Jesus, as a result of his love for us.
THE FIRST CHRISTMAS
The story of the first Christmas happened years after the prophesy. To start, the Roman emperor Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman empire. And everyone was to go back to their hometown to register. As a result, a man named Joseph also went back from Nazareth to Bethlehem, where his ancestor, King David, lived. A woman named Mary went with him. Consequently, months before the census, God had sent an angel named Gabriel to visit Mary to tell her that she would be the mother of God’s son, Jesus.
While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born. That baby was God’s son, Jesus. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
That same night, there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby keeping watch over their sheep. An angel of the lord appeared to them, and they were very afraid. But the angel said “Do not be afraid. For behold I bring you tidings of great joy which shall be for all people. Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you: He is Christ the Lord.” Immediately, the Shepherds went to see the baby, and they were overjoyed.
Some time later, wise men from the East came to bestow gifts for the baby: gold, frankincense and myrrh.
THE LEGACY OF THE CHRISTMAS STORY
The Christmas Story is one of the most important stories in Christian heritage. It reminds us that God loves us so much, he sent his Son to help us, even when we didn’t deserve it. So, no matter what you do at Christmas, just remember that God loves you. When we celebrate Christmas, we remember when Jesus first came to Earth, and what a joy he is to all those who believe in Him.
